Energisation is the moment a design stops being a drawing. Whether it is an industrial plant, a 132 kV switchyard or a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the network has to be proven safe and stable before power is applied — not discovered to be marginal afterwards.

That proof comes from a set of power system studies, modelled in ETAP, and from the safety reviews that sit alongside them.

The core ETAP studies

  • Load Flow & Voltage Drop Analysis — confirms that voltages stay within limits in every operating case, sets transformer taps and supports power factor correction and cable sizing.
  • Short Circuit Analysis (IEC 60909 / IEEE) — verifies that switchgear and equipment are rated for the fault levels they will actually see.
  • Motor Acceleration Studies — simulates the starting of large HV/MV motors so their inrush does not cause severe bus voltage drops.
  • Harmonic Analysis — evaluates total harmonic distortion (THD) in VFD-heavy plants and sizes filters where they are needed.
  • Protective Relay Coordination — relay setting charts and TCC curves so that a fault is cleared by the nearest device and contained locally, instead of tripping healthy parts of the plant.
  • Arc Flash Hazard Analysis (IEEE 1584 / NFPA 70E) — incident energy, boundaries and PPE labelling for safe work on energised equipment.

Protection that is coordinated in the model is protection that behaves predictably on site.

Power quality audits

Studies predict how the network should behave; a power quality audit checks how it does. Analytical and field-focused audits evaluate THD, voltage sags and resonance issues, so that problems are corrected before they reach sensitive loads and drives.

The safety reviews that go with them

Electrical studies are only half of a safe start-up. On process plants, one review carries the other half:

  • Hazardous Area Classification — Zone 0, 1 and 2 schedules and layouts per IEC 60079, so that every item of equipment in a classified area is correctly selected.

Before you energise

Taken together, the studies and the review confirm safety compliance, prevent nuisance tripping and protect against system failure. Field checks complete the picture: FAT/SAT inspection, pre-commissioning, earthing integrity audits and energisation checks on switchgear, GIS substations, MCCs, VFDs, BESS and UPS systems.

TRP Engineering carries out ETAP power system studies, power quality audits and hazardous area classification for industrial plants, substations up to 132 kV and BESS facilities. Send us your single line diagrams and we will come back with the studies your plant needs.
